Bat Exclusion Timing – 2025

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has updated its seasonal restrictions on bat exclusion:

  • Exclusion is not allowed from June 1 through July 31
  • Work may resume starting August 1

Previously, the restricted period extended through August 15. This change allows homeowners to address bat issues sooner—while still protecting vulnerable bat pups.

Why This Matters

Several bat species in Wisconsin—such as the little brown bat and northern long-eared bat—are now listed as state-threatened due to population declines from white-nose syndrome.

During early summer, bats form maternity colonies in attics and wall voids. Attempting exclusion during this time can:

  • Separate mothers from flightless pups
  • Lead to frantic adult bats trying to re-enter
  • Result in dead bats, strong odors, and additional home issues

What If You Have a Health Concern?

This permit allows exclusion during the restricted period only in cases of health or safety risk and must be filed with the DNR within five working days of starting the work.

While this option exists, we still strongly recommend waiting until after July 31 unless absolutely necessary. Early exclusion often leads to more problems than it solves.
